On 27th March, 1915, the 1st Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 14th Brigade, 5th Division moved into trenches south-west of Messines. They spent four days here and their relief on 31st March was hampered by bright moonlight of which the enemy took full advantage, unleashing both artillery and rifle fire. James Dodds died from wounds on 1st April, 1915, and it was likely that he was wounded during this period in the front line. |
